How to check if your domain is pointing correctly

This guide explains how to check whether your domain name is pointing to the correct hosting account.

If a domain is not pointing correctly, visitors may see an old website, a parking page, a server default page, or no website at all. This can happen after changing nameservers, updating DNS records, moving hosting provider, or launching a new website.

Checking domain pointing is a useful first step when a website is not appearing where you expect it to. It can help you understand whether the issue is related to DNS, hosting, or a recent domain change.

In this article, we will cover

  • What domain pointing means
  • How to check whether the domain is reaching the correct server
  • What signs suggest the domain is pointing to the wrong place
  • When DNS changes may still be updating

What does domain pointing mean?

Domain pointing simply means where your domain name sends visitors when they enter your website address into a browser. This is usually controlled by nameservers or DNS records.

If the domain points to the correct hosting account, your website should load from the expected server. If it points somewhere else, visitors may see the wrong content or no website at all.

Check what loads in your browser

Start by visiting your domain in a browser. Look carefully at what appears.

If you see your current website, the domain may already be pointing correctly. If you see an old website, a holding page, a directory listing, or a server default page, that can suggest the domain is pointing to the wrong place or that the website files are not set up correctly on the active hosting account.

It is also a good idea to test both the version with www and the version without it, as they should normally lead to the same website.

Consider any recent DNS or nameserver changes

If you have recently changed your domain nameservers or updated DNS records, the changes may still be propagating. DNS propagation is the time it takes for internet providers and networks to refresh their records and recognise the new settings.

During this period, some people may see the correct website while others still see the old one. This can make it seem as though the domain is only partly working, when in fact the update is still spreading across the internet.

In many cases, this is temporary and resolves once the DNS changes have fully updated.

Check the hosting account details

Make sure the domain has been added to the correct hosting account and that the website files are present in the expected location. A domain can point to the right server but still fail to show the intended website if the files have not been uploaded or the site has not been configured fully.

If you are using cPanel, it can also help to confirm that the domain is listed correctly within the account and linked to the right website directory.

When to ask for help

If you have checked the domain, waited for recent DNS changes to update, and still believe the domain is pointing incorrectly, it may be time to contact support.

When contacting support, it helps to mention the domain name, what you expected to see, what is loading instead, and whether you have recently changed nameservers or DNS records. This makes it easier to investigate the issue more quickly.
