How to restore a website backup using JetBackup 5

This guide explains how to restore a website backup using JetBackup 5 in cPanel.

JetBackup 5 allows you to restore backup data that has already been created automatically for your hosting account. This can be useful if your website files have been changed accidentally, a database update has caused a problem, or you need to recover an earlier version of your site.

Depending on your account permissions, JetBackup 5 may allow you to restore full backups or specific items such as your home directory, databases, domains, certificates, or email accounts. In many cases, restoring only the affected area is the safest option.

In this article, we will cover

  • Where to find restore options in JetBackup 5
  • How to choose the correct backup type
  • How to select a restore point
  • What to check before restoring data

Open JetBackup 5

First, log in to cPanel and open JetBackup 5. On the dashboard, look for the Restore & Download section. This area shows the backup types currently available for your account.

Choose what you want to restore

Under Restore & Download, select the type of backup you want to restore. Depending on your permissions, you may see options such as Full Backups, Home Directory, Databases, Domains, Certificates, or Email Accounts.

If only part of your website has a problem, it is often better to restore that specific item rather than restoring the whole account. For example, if only your website files were affected, restoring the Home Directory may be more appropriate than using a full account restore.

Select a restore point

After choosing the backup type, JetBackup 5 will display the available backup dates for that item. These dates represent the restore points you can use.

Select the backup date that best matches the point in time you want to return to. In most cases, you should choose the most recent backup from before the problem began. If the issue started after a plugin update, code change, or file upload, try to choose a date from before that event.

Available backup dates depend on the retention policy configured for the hosting environment, so older restore points may not always be available.

Start the restore

Once you have chosen the correct restore point, select the restore option shown in JetBackup 5. The system may ask you to confirm the action before continuing.

Take a moment to review your selection carefully before confirming. Restoring a backup can replace current files or data with an earlier version. If your website has changed since that backup was created, those newer changes may be overwritten.

For that reason, it is often sensible to download a copy of the current site or database before performing a restore, especially if you may need to compare versions later.

Monitor the restore process

After the restore request has been submitted, JetBackup 5 may place it into the Queue while it is processed. Larger restores can take a little longer, so it is normal if the change is not immediate.

Once the restore has completed, test your website carefully. Check that pages load correctly, forms work as expected, and any missing content has been recovered.
